What is the battery backup on an electronic ignition fireplace for?

It's there so your electronic-ignition (IPI) fireplace can still light when the power is out. These units normally run on household current, but they hold a set of batteries — usually AA or 9-volt — that automatically take over during an outage, sparking the pilot and keeping the fireplace lighting. When the batteries are dead and the power's out, an IPI unit won't start.

It's the compromise that lets an efficient electronic unit still behave like backup heat when it counts.

Keep them fresh — it's the whole point

Batteries only help if they're alive, and the failure we see every winter is the same: an outage hits, the homeowner reaches for the fireplace, and the batteries died back in October. We replace them as part of annual service, late summer or early fall, before you're depending on the unit. Two honest limits: the batteries light the fire but won't run the electric blower, so you get radiant heat during an outage, and battery backup is meant for outages of hours to a day, not a Helene-length week.
