Will a gas fireplace still work when the power goes out?
In Brevard, most gas hearths run on propane — and propane changes nothing about outage performance. A self-powered pilot lights LP just as readily as natural gas with the grid down; what decides it is ignition type, not fuel. A millivolt or standing-pilot unit needs no electricity; an electronic one needs its battery pack. You get radiant heat, minus the blower.
Propane doesn't make it automatic
Because Brevard sits in propane country — downtown homes and cabins out toward Connestee Falls and Sherwood Forest — people assume LP means self-sufficiency. Half true. The propane keeps flowing from your tank whether or not the lines are up, but the fireplace still has to light it, and that's an ignition question. A Kozy Heat Springfield or similar millivolt propane unit makes its own current off the pilot and runs with nothing plugged in. An electronic-ignition propane fireplace, on the other hand, is dead without live batteries — so we check that pack at every service.
Transylvania's wet season is the other threat
Brevard takes 80-plus inches of rain a year, and that moisture is hard on the parts an outage-ready fireplace depends on: it rusts dampers, spalls brick, and corrodes the pilot and burner assemblies tucked in damp crawl spaces and chimney chases. A neglected pilot won't light reliably on battery or millivolt when you finally need it. Annual service — clearing the webbing and grit, checking the assembly — is what keeps that self-powered ignition honest. Sized for the cabin
For an intermittently used cabin, we'll spec a propane unit that lights instantly and heats on its own, so an outage during a cold snap doesn't leave the place freezing.
