What is a thermopile, and how is it different from a thermocouple?

A thermopile is essentially a stack of thermocouples wired together, so it generates a lot more voltage — enough to actually power the main gas valve and wall switch, not just hold a safety valve open. A thermocouple makes only a few dozen millivolts for a single safety job; a thermopile makes several hundred, running the whole millivolt fireplace without any electricity.

A thermocouple, multiplied

A thermopile is what you get when you wire a whole stack of thermocouples together in series. Each one makes a tiny voltage from the pilot's heat; string enough of them together and the voltages add up. Where a single thermocouple produces only a few dozen millivolts, a thermopile stacks enough of them to put out several hundred — a big enough supply to do real work.

Different job, not just a bigger part

That extra output is the whole point. A thermocouple makes only enough current for one safety task: holding the pilot valve open. A thermopile makes enough to power the main gas valve and the low-voltage controls — your wall switch, remote receiver, or thermostat — with no household electricity at all. In short, a thermocouple guards the pilot; a thermopile runs the fireplace. Some millivolt systems use both, a thermocouple for safety and a thermopile for power; many modern units let the thermopile handle both roles.
