What is a thermocouple and what does it do?

A thermocouple is the small metal probe that sits in your pilot flame and acts as a safety proof-of-flame. Heated by the pilot, it generates a tiny voltage that holds a gas safety valve open; if the pilot ever goes out, the probe cools, the voltage drops, and the valve snaps shut so raw gas can't escape. It's a single, inexpensive part.

A thermocouple is a slim metal probe that sits with its tip right in the pilot flame, and its whole job is to prove the pilot is lit. It's a single, inexpensive safety part found on standing-pilot gas fireplaces, log sets, and stoves — quiet, mechanical, and remarkably reliable for how little it costs.

How a little heat holds the gas open

Heat the junction of two dissimilar metals and it produces a tiny voltage — a few dozen millivolts, thousandths of a volt. That small current energizes a little electromagnet inside the gas valve that holds the pilot safety valve open. Let the pilot go out and the probe cools almost immediately, the voltage collapses, the electromagnet releases, and the valve snaps shut. That's the fail-safe: no flame heating the thermocouple means no gas, period.

The most common 'pilot won't stay lit' call

When a pilot lights while you hold the knob but dies the moment you let go, a tired or sooted thermocouple is the usual suspect — it's no longer generating enough current to hold the valve. It's a small, affordable part and a quick fix, one of the most routine repairs we run.
