How does the gas valve in a fireplace work?
The gas valve is the brain and the gatekeeper — it holds gas back until it gets proof the pilot is lit, then meters fuel to the burner on demand from your switch, remote, or thermostat. Many fireplaces use a self-powered millivolt valve, where the pilot flame itself generates the electricity to open it, so it keeps working with the power out; others use an electronic valve that needs a battery backup in an outage.
What the valve is actually doing
The gas valve sits between your gas line and the burner, and it does three jobs at once: it's a safety interlock, a regulator, and a switch. Before it will send gas to the main burner, it needs proof the pilot is burning — that proof comes from a thermocouple or thermopile, a small sensor heated by the pilot flame that generates a tiny electrical current measured in millivolts.
No pilot, no current, no gas. That's the safety layer that keeps unburned gas from ever pouring into your room, and it's why you can't just crack the valve and expect a flame.
Millivolt vs. electronic — why it matters in the mountains
Plenty of the gas fireplaces around here run a millivolt valve, and the design is quietly brilliant: the pilot's own heat generates enough electricity to open the valve when you flip the switch. No wall outlet, no batteries, no circuit board. Many newer units use intermittent-pilot (IPI) ignition instead — an electronic valve and a control board — which saves fuel day to day because there's no standing pilot burning around the clock. When the valve is the problem
A valve rarely fails outright. Far more often the fireplace won't light because the pilot sensor is weak, the pilot orifice is clogged — spiders and dust love it over the off-season — or a connection corroded. We diagnose the whole chain before condemning the valve, because a new valve is the expensive part and it's usually not what's actually wrong.
