What gas pressure does a fireplace need — what is manifold pressure?
Manifold pressure is the gas pressure at the valve outlet feeding the burner, measured in inches of water column. Natural-gas fireplaces typically target around 3.5 inches WC at the manifold, propane around 10 — but the appliance's rating plate is the authority. It's set at install and verified with a manometer. Wrong manifold pressure means a weak flame or a sooty overfire.
Two pressures, two jobs
Gas systems work in stages. Line (supply) pressure is what reaches the appliance's regulator; manifold pressure is the lower, precisely regulated pressure the valve delivers to the burner itself. Manifold pressure is the number that actually shapes your flame.
It's measured in inches of water column — a very low, very sensitive unit. As a rule of thumb, natural-gas appliances target roughly 3.5 inches and propane roughly 10, but the appliance's rating plate is the final word, and that's the number we set to.
Why we put a gauge on it
You can't judge pressure by glancing at a flame from across the room, so at every install and conversion we connect a manometer to the valve's pressure tap and read the actual manifold pressure while the unit runs. Too low and the flame is weak, won't reach the logs, or drops out; too high and you get an overfire that soots the glass and stresses the appliance.
Propane and natural gas have entirely different targets, which is exactly why a fuel conversion always includes a pressure check — it's not optional and it's not eyeballed.
Where mountain reality comes in
In our area, supply matters. Propane systems out in Fairview, Candler, and the cabins rely on a tank regulator we coordinate with your propane supplier, and a fireplace far down a long or undersized line can starve for pressure under load — several appliances calling at once will show it. Natural-gas homes on the Asheville and Hendersonville mains are usually steadier, but a long branch to a new fireplace still has to be sized right.
