Can a gas fireplace be controlled by WiFi or a smart home system?

Yes — many modern gas fireplaces offer WiFi control through the manufacturer's app, and some tie into Alexa or Google Assistant. Brands like Heat & Glo, Heatilator, Napoleon, and Majestic build app-ready ignition systems. From your phone you can turn the fire on or off, adjust flame and heat, set a thermostat, and run timers.

How the smart control actually happens

The fireplace doesn't get smart on its own — it uses an electronic ignition system with a WiFi module and an app. Heat & Glo and Heatilator build on the IntelliFire system, with IntelliFire Touch adding the WiFi and app control; Majestic's Meridian 42 runs IntelliFire Touch; and Napoleon offers app-capable controls on its app-ready models.

The module talks to your home WiFi, and the app talks to the module. Once it's set up, your phone becomes the remote — on/off, flame height, blower, thermostat, and schedules, from the couch or from across town.

What it's genuinely good for

The best real-world use is thermostat and scheduling. Have the fire warm the living room before you're up, hold a temperature while you're home, and shut off on a timer so it never runs all night by accident.

Voice control is a nice extra — turning on the fireplace through a smart speaker on a cold morning. For a second home or cabin, app control means you can take the chill off before you arrive up the mountain.

The honest caveats

Two things we're straight about. First, a real fire deserves respect: we don't recommend lighting any fireplace when no one's home to keep an eye on it, app or not, and it's no substitute for supervision.

Second, WiFi and app modules need power and internet — in a true outage they go dark, so if backup heat is the goal, you want a millivolt or battery-backup unit that lights without the network, and treat the app as a convenience on top. We'll set up whichever fits how you live. Call (828) 545-0525 or see the app-controlled units in our Asheville showroom.
