What's the difference between an on/off remote and a thermostatic remote?
An on/off remote just toggles the fireplace — flame on, flame off, and maybe flame height. A thermostatic remote reads the room temperature and cycles the fireplace automatically to hold a set temperature, like a thermostat for your hearth. On/off is for ambiance on demand; thermostatic is for actually heating a room hands-free.
On/off: you're the thermostat
With an on/off remote, you decide. Push on, the burner lights; push off, it stops. Nicer versions add flame height, a blower control, and a countdown timer, but the fireplace runs at whatever flame level you set until you change it.
There's no room sensor involved — the fireplace has no idea how warm the room is and won't shut itself off, so managing the temperature is on you. It's simple, reliable, and perfect if you mostly want fire for the look and a little warmth on a cool mountain evening.
Thermostatic: the fireplace watches the room
A thermostatic remote has a temperature sensor. You set a target — say 70 — and the remote cycles the burner on and off, or on a modulating unit turns the flame up and down, to hold that number.
That's what makes a gas fireplace a real zone heater: it warms the room you're actually in and backs off when it gets there instead of running full-tilt. Many remotes bundle both, with a switch for Manual, Thermostat, and often a Smart mode that modulates to maintain temperature efficiently.
Which one we'd put in your room
If the fireplace is mainly a centerpiece, on/off is plenty. If you're leaning on it to heat a great room, a bonus room over the garage, or to keep a cabin from freezing while you're away, thermostatic earns its keep — and on a modulating unit like a Valor, it's a genuinely efficient way to zone-heat.
