The rural valleys around Mars Hill — Spring Creek, Gabriels Creek, Forks of Ivy — lean on propane and wood heat, and a real wood-burning masonry chimney takes weather harder than a sealed gas flue ever does. At 2,350 feet in one of the colder pockets we cover, water that soaks into the crown and brick freezes often and spalls fast.
