Does an electric fireplace work during a power outage?

No. An electric fireplace runs entirely on household electricity, so the moment the power goes out, both the heater and the flame effect go dark. There's no pilot, no gas, nothing to fall back on. If backup heat during a WNC outage is your goal, electric is the one option that can't deliver it.

Why Electric Is the One That Quits

Electric fireplaces like the Dimplex IgniteXL heat with a roughly 1,500-watt element and light their 'flame' with LEDs — both need a live outlet. Unlike a gas unit with millivolt or battery-backup ignition, there's no fuel to burn and no mechanical way to make heat without the grid.

When Helene took power down across the mountains for days, the electric fireplaces were as cold as the furnaces. Central heat stops when the power does, and so does electric — they're in the same boat.

What Electric Is Good For (and Not)

That's not a knock on electric — it's just honest about its lane. An electric fireplace is a clean, simple supplemental heater: about 5,000 BTU, up to roughly 400 square feet, flame at the flip of a switch, no venting, no gas line. Great for a bonus room, a finished basement, or an apartment.

It's the wrong tool if the whole reason you want a fireplace is heat you can count on when the lines go down.

If Outage Heat Is the Real Goal

For grid-down heat in WNC, you want fuel, not electricity. A direct-vent gas fireplace with battery-backup or millivolt ignition — a Napoleon, or a Valor H5 that runs on zero electricity at all — keeps throwing heat with the power out. A wood stove or wood insert is total grid independence.
