Will my gas fireplace work when the power is out?
Often yes — it depends on how yours ignites. A gas fireplace with a standing pilot or millivolt system, or one with battery-backup electronic ignition, will light and throw heat with the power out. A unit that relies only on plug-in electronic ignition won't light until you add battery backup or a generator. Either way, the blower needs electricity, so you get radiant heat but no fan.
It comes down to ignition
There are three setups. A standing-pilot or millivolt system — the Valor H5 is our flagship here — needs zero electricity; the pilot's own tiny flame generates the millivolts to open the valve, so it burns straight through a grid-down week. Many Napoleon units use battery-backup intelligent ignition: house power for daily convenience, batteries that take over automatically when the grid drops. The third type relies purely on plug-in electronics and goes dark in an outage unless you feed it another power source.
Heat yes, blower no
Here's the honest limit: even on a unit that lights without power, the blower or fan that pushes warm air into the room runs on electricity and won't work in an outage. You still get real radiant and convective heat off the glass and firebox — enough to hold a room — just without the fan spreading it. That's a fair trade when the alternative is a cold house.
The Helene lesson
When Helene knocked out power across the mountains for days, the homes that stayed warm were the ones with a working wood or gas hearth — power-optional heat, we call it. If outage resilience is why you're adding or replacing a fireplace, tell us up front and we'll steer you toward a standing-pilot, millivolt, or battery-backup unit rather than an electronic-only one.
