Will my gas fireplace work when the power is out?

But because recent flooding water-damaged so many hearths and gas appliances along the Pigeon River, any unit that sat in floodwater needs its gas controls inspected before you rely on it for backup heat.
Flood-exposed controls come first
Canton's mill-town homes along the Pigeon River valley took serious water, and floodwater is unforgiving to gas appliances — valves, control boards, and millivolt sensors that were submerged can corrode and fail in ways you won't see until you need them. Before you count on a previously flooded fireplace as outage heat, have the gas connections and controls inspected. A unit that lights today but hides flood damage inside is not the backup you think it is. That inspection is licensed gas work, and it's exactly our lane.
Then the ignition decides
Once the appliance checks out, the outage answer is the same as anywhere: a millivolt or standing-pilot valve needs no electricity and burns through a grid-down stretch; a battery-backup unit switches to batteries on its own; a plug-in electronic-only model stays dark. Valley damp, and no fan in an outage
