Will my gas fireplace work when the power is out?

Candler is propane country by the old rule, though gas mains now reach parts of the growing Enka-Candler corridor — either way, your fireplace can run in an outage. On propane the tank feeds it with no grid power; on natural gas the mains stay pressurized. What decides it is the ignition: standing-pilot and millivolt work grid-down, plug-in electronic doesn't.

Two fuels, one outage answer

Candler spans both fuel worlds — propane out toward Hominy Valley and the Pisgah Highway, natural gas reaching the fast-growing Enka-Candler corridor and its newer subdivisions. For outages, both are fine: a propane tank delivers fuel under its own pressure with zero electricity, and utility gas mains stay pressurized when the grid fails. So the fuel type doesn't decide whether you have heat in a power failure. Your ignition system does, and that's what to check.

Builder-grade fireboxes, upgraded for heat

A lot of Candler's fast-growing subdivisions came with basic, decorative builder-grade fireboxes — pretty, but often plug-in electronic and not much of a heater. Owners here tend to want a real, heat-producing upgrade within a few years, and that's the chance to build in outage resilience: a millivolt or battery-backup unit that keeps burning when the power's out. The Hominy Valley bowl, which traps air, is also a good reason to favor clean-burning sealed combustion over an open fire.

Fan needs power, heat doesn't

Whatever you install, the blower runs on electricity, so during an outage the heat is radiant off the glass rather than fan-circulated. Candler is in Buncombe County and fifteen minutes west of our Asheville showroom — we permit and inspect every gas job. If backup heat is part of why you're upgrading that builder-grade box, tell us and we'll spec for it. Call (828) 545-0525.
