Will my gas fireplace work when the power is out?

A gas fireplace with a standing-pilot, millivolt, or battery-backup ignition will run in an outage — but the heavily used, inconsistently maintained rentals near WCU often have neglected pilots that won't light when you need them, power or not. River-valley damp on old flues
The Tuckasegee valley's cold-air drainage and river moisture rust dampers and degrade flue liners faster than in drier towns, and the historic masonry chimneys around Dillsboro feel it most. A gas fireplace that lights fine but vents through a corroded liner isn't dependable backup heat. Have the venting inspected along with the ignition before you rely on it for a winter outage, especially on an older converted hearth.
