Will my gas fireplace work when the power is out?

In Sylva it depends on the unit and on how well it's been kept. A gas fireplace with a standing-pilot, millivolt, or battery-backup ignition will run in an outage — but the heavily used, inconsistently maintained rentals near WCU often have neglected pilots that won't light when you need them, power or not. Fuel here is mixed, natural gas and propane.

Maintenance decides more than fuel

Sylva's student and rental housing near Western Carolina gets hard use and spotty upkeep, and that shows up at the worst moment. A millivolt or standing-pilot fireplace is designed to light without electricity — but if spiders and dust have clogged the pilot assembly over an unattended off-season, it won't light in an outage no matter how good the ignition design is. In rental-heavy Sylva, the reliability question is as much about annual service as it is about the ignition type.

River-valley damp on old flues

The Tuckasegee valley's cold-air drainage and river moisture rust dampers and degrade flue liners faster than in drier towns, and the historic masonry chimneys around Dillsboro feel it most. A gas fireplace that lights fine but vents through a corroded liner isn't dependable backup heat. Have the venting inspected along with the ignition before you rely on it for a winter outage, especially on an older converted hearth.

What runs, and what waits for power

When the setup is sound, the outage rules are simple: millivolt and standing-pilot units need no electricity, battery-backup units switch over automatically, and plug-in electronic-only units stay dark. The blower always needs power, so outage heat is radiant, not fan-forced. Any new gas install is licensed, permitted work either way.
