Does closing the glass doors on a wood-burning fireplace keep smoke out of the room?
Mostly, while they're closed. Glass doors block the smoke that rolls out during a downdraft or as a fire dies down, and they stop the flue from stealing your heated house air overnight. But on a standard open fireplace you shouldn't run a roaring fire with the doors shut tight — open them while it's burning hot, close them as it burns to coals.
When the doors earn their keep
Glass doors do real work at the two moments open fireplaces misbehave: startup, before the flue is warm and drawing, and burn-down, when the fire weakens and can no longer push smoke up a cooling chimney.
Closed doors also seal the firebox during the off-season, so your air conditioning isn't disappearing up the chimney and outdoor odors aren't drifting back in. In our downdraft-prone WNC valleys, that off-season seal alone is worth having.
The operating rule people miss
On a standard open masonry or prefab fireplace, the manufacturer wants the doors fully open while the fire is burning hot — glass and frames aren't built to trap a raging fire's heat, and you can crack the glass or warp the frame.
So the honest technique is: open while actively burning, closed as it dies to embers, closed when cold. Doors reduce smoke spillage; they are not a license to choke a big fire down behind them.
The version that keeps all the smoke out
