Does electronic ignition really use less gas than a standing pilot light?

Yes — electronic ignition uses meaningfully less gas because there's no flame burning around the clock. A standing pilot sips gas 24/7, all year, whether the fireplace is on or not. Electronic (intermittent) ignition lights the pilot only when you call for fire, then shuts it off completely. Over a full off-season, that's real fuel you're not paying for.

What each system actually does

A standing pilot keeps a small flame lit continuously so the fireplace is always ready — reliable, simple, and the reason so many older units light instantly. The trade is that little flame burns gas every hour of every day, including all summer. Electronic ignition — marketed as IntelliFire on Heat & Glo, Heatilator, and Majestic, and under its own name on Napoleon — sparks the pilot on demand and extinguishes it when you're done. No fire when the fireplace is idle means no idle gas burn.

How much you actually save

The pilot's draw is small hour to hour, but it runs thousands of hours a year, so the savings show up as a low, steady line on your gas or propane bill rather than a dramatic drop. It matters more on propane — out in Fairview, Candler, and the cabins, you're paying delivered LP by the gallon, and a pilot quietly drinking through the off-season is fuel a truck had to haul up your driveway. On a natural-gas main in Asheville, the same pilot costs less but still adds up over a year of doing nothing.

The outage tradeoff worth knowing
