Does having my chimney swept improve the air quality inside my house?

In Asheville, yes, indirectly. Around Montford and North Asheville, the original masonry flues we sweep are often the difference between a fire that drafts cleanly and one that hazes the room with woodsmoke. Clearing creosote and debris restores draft, so combustion byproducts leave up the chimney instead of settling into your rooms. A sweep is not, however, a whole-house air purifier.

Old flues, city air

Asheville's housing splits two ways, and the air-quality math differs for each. The century-old masonry chimneys in Montford, West Asheville, and around Grove Park were built for constant wood fires, and their tall clay-lined flues collect creosote, spalled brick, and the leaf fall from the mature trees that shade these streets. When that buildup narrows the flue, smoke that should rise instead rolls back over the hearth, and you smell it in the drapes and upholstery for days. Sweeping reopens the passage so the draft does its job. Newer South Asheville homes more often run sealed direct-vent gas, which doesn't spill combustion into the room the same way, but its vent still needs an annual look for nests and blockage.

The check that rides along

Because we're a licensed gas contractor as well as a hearth company, the sweep our techs run doubles as a diagnostic. We follow the CSIA and NFPA inspection standards, checking the liner, damper, and cap while the flue is open, and if the visit turns up a cracked liner or a gas-vent problem, we're licensed to correct it rather than hand you off to someone else. From the showroom at 629 Emma Rd we cover the whole city, so scheduling in Kenilworth or Biltmore Village is routine.

When to book, and what it won't fix

Book late summer or early fall, before the first cold snap has you leaning on the fire. Asheville's elevation keeps nights in the 20s well into spring, so the burning season is long here. Be clear on the limits, though: a sweep cleans the chimney, not the living room. It does nothing for pollen, pet dander, or ordinary dust, and it's no replacement for an air filter. Call (828) 545-0525 to get on the schedule.
