Flat Rock's antebellum and turn-of-the-century homes were built around big open masonry hearths that were never efficient — they pull cold-air drafts down into the room as often as they push heat out. The favorite fix is a sealed gas insert that preserves the historic look while actually heating. But dropping a gas appliance into a home at 2,261 feet means jetting it for altitude; skip that and the new insert runs rich, films its glass with soot, and disappoints in a house you're trying to keep original.

Why the wide old flues fight you

Draft is harder to build at elevation to begin with, and an oversized 1800s flue makes it worse — there's too much cold volume for a small gas flame to warm and move. A correctly sized stainless liner shrinks that channel to what the appliance actually needs, and a sealed direct-vent unit sidesteps the old chimney entirely for homes around Historic Flat Rock, Kanuga, and Highland Lake.
