Manufacturers publish an elevation above which a gas appliance has to be re-jetted or derated, and at 3,020 feet Maggie Valley sits above just about all of them. An off-the-shelf unit installed here without that adjustment burns rich immediately — the thin air can't supply enough oxygen for the fuel, so you get a soft yellow flame, soot creeping across the glass, and heat well short of the rating. Up here that's not a subtle loss; it's the whole point of the fireplace undercut.
