Low enough that altitude eases up

Most brands set an elevation threshold above which a gas appliance needs a high-altitude orifice or a derate, and at 1,648 feet a good many Marshall homes sit below it. That's a genuine difference from a place like Maggie Valley at 3,000-plus — the thin-air rich-burn problem is milder down in the French Broad gorge. We still check every manufacturer's spec against your exact address, because thresholds vary by brand, but altitude is rarely the headline here.

What doesn't get a pass is the fuel: an appliance jetted for the wrong gas, or a propane unit left on natural-gas orifices, soots regardless of elevation.

Steep lots, tricky draft

Marshall's real challenge is its terrain — homes built hard against the mountainside and a revitalized downtown of narrow multi-story buildings, all in a gorge that brings cool, damp evenings. Tight lots complicate chimney routing, and the gorge air makes draft unpredictable. A sealed direct-vent unit, which vents out a sidewall and pulls its own combustion air, often solves what a conventional chimney would struggle with on these lots.
