A lot of Swannanoa's recent work comes out of recovery — homes rebuilt or renovated after storm damage, many of them replacing hearths that didn't survive. Starting fresh is the right moment to get elevation correct: at 2,150 feet, a gas appliance set up for sea level burns rich from day one, sooting its glass and falling short on heat. Doing it right during the rebuild beats discovering the problem the first cold night in the new house.

For the older Grovemont homes from the 1940s through the '60s that still have their original masonry fireboxes, a sealed gas insert — jetted for altitude — turns a drafty relic into a real heater.

River-valley damp and draft

Swannanoa's river valley pools cold air and holds fog and damp that's hard on masonry chimneys — and damp, cold flues make draft harder to establish, a problem elevation already worsens. Sealed direct-vent units dodge that fight by venting out a sidewall and pulling combustion air from outside, which is why they're a common pick for Bee Tree and Swannanoa Village rebuilds.
