Higher town, longer heating season

Waynesville sits roughly 10 to 15 degrees colder than the lower WNC valleys, with a heating season that runs about three weeks longer than Asheville's. That means the fireplace works harder and for more of the year — so any heat lost to a bad altitude setup adds up. At 2,644 feet the air is thin enough that a unit jetted for sea level will burn rich the day it's lit: soft yellow flame, black film on the glass, output well under spec.
