Does high elevation affect how a gas fireplace burns or how much heat it makes?
Yes. Brevard sits about 2,230 feet up, inside the range where manufacturers de-rate gas appliances for thinner air. Out in the cabins on propane, that altitude correction stacks on top of propane's own hotter, higher-pressure burn — two separate orifice questions on one fireplace. Get either wrong and Transylvania's damp, drafty chimneys make the sooting worse.
Propane cabins carry two corrections at once
Much of Brevard beyond downtown runs on propane — the fuel of Transylvania's cabins and mountain lots. Propane already needs a different orifice and pressure than natural gas because it burns hotter per unit; add 2,230 feet of altitude and you've got a second correction layered on the first. A burner that isn't matched for both fuel and elevation runs rich, and the flame goes lazy and yellow. This is exactly why a fireplace has to be set up by someone who does the gas side, not sold off a floor and left to guess.
Wet county, harder draft, quicker soot
Brevard catches 80-plus inches of rain a year, and all that moisture rusts dampers, cracks crowns, and leaves chimney chases and crawl spaces damp — which drags on draft. A weak draft and thin altitude air both starve the flame of oxygen, so any burn error shows up faster here as soot on the glass. A sealed direct-vent unit sidesteps the wet-chimney draft problem entirely, and we tune its air-fuel mix for your actual elevation before we sign off.
