Does high elevation affect how a gas fireplace burns or how much heat it makes?

Yes. At higher elevation the air is thinner, so there's less oxygen for combustion — which is why manufacturers de-rate or re-orifice many gas appliances above roughly 2,000 feet so they still burn cleanly. Across much of WNC that matters. A unit set up for sea level can run rich and lazy up here; correcting for altitude keeps the flame clean and the heat right.

Thinner air, less oxygen, a different burn

Combustion needs oxygen, and there's simply less of it per cubic foot as you climb. Feed a burner the same amount of gas it would get at sea level and, up on a mountain lot, that gas can't find enough air to burn completely — the flame goes soft and yellow and can start to soot. Manufacturers account for this: their installation manuals specify altitude ranges and, above a certain point, call for a smaller orifice or a de-rated gas input so the air-fuel ratio stays correct. This is standard, listed guidance, not a workaround.

Where this actually bites in WNC

Asheville sits around 2,100 feet, and plenty of the homes we serve climb well past that — Cashiers, Highlands, and the cabins tucked up our mountain roads run considerably higher. That's exactly the band where altitude adjustments come into play. It's also why a fireplace someone bought elsewhere and had set up for flatland conditions can run dirty once it's installed up a ridge. Getting the orifice and input matched to your actual elevation is part of a correct install here, not an afterthought.

It stacks with the other mountain factors

Altitude rarely travels alone. Draft is harder at elevation, our ridges and valleys and tall trees cause downdrafts, and propane — the fuel of the higher, more rural properties — burns hotter per unit and needs its own orifice and pressure.
