Does high elevation affect how a gas fireplace burns or how much heat it makes?
Less than you'd guess, actually. Marshall sits about 1,648 feet down in the French Broad gorge — below the roughly 2,000-foot line where manufacturers start requiring altitude adjustment. So here, elevation is rarely the thing hurting your burn. The real culprit is draft: the gorge, the steep lots, and tight chimney routing that make combustion air fight to move.
Below the altitude line — the exception up here
Most of WNC sits high enough to need altitude tuning; Marshall doesn't, quite. At 1,648 feet in the river gorge, it's one of the lower spots we serve, usually under the elevation band where manufacturers de-rate a gas appliance. That's genuinely different from the ridgetop towns — a unit here often runs fine on its standard setting. We still check it against the chart, but in Marshall we spend more attention on draft than on orifices.
Gorge and hillside make draft the burn problem
The French Broad gorge brings cool, damp evenings and swirling air, and Marshall's steep hillside lots — plus that narrow downtown built hard against the mountainside — make chimneys awkward to route with a clean vertical run. A poorly drafting chimney starves a flame of oxygen and soots it, no altitude required. Cold, still air parks in a cold flue like a plug. A sealed direct-vent unit that vents out a sidewall solves most of it, and we plan the venting for the tight site.
