Yes, it matters a lot — the logs and embers on a gas set are placed to exact factory positions so flames rise between the logs, not directly onto them. Move a log over the burner ports or bunch the embers wrong and you'll get sooting, carbon buildup, and a dirty flame. Always follow the manufacturer's placement diagram exactly.
Placement is not decoration
Where the logs and embers sit on a gas set genuinely matters, and it's not about looks. Every log is molded to a specific shape and mapped to a specific spot so the flames rise up through the gaps between logs rather than licking directly onto a log face.
Set a log crooked, slide it over the burner ports, or let it lean into the flame path, and the flame quenches against the ceramic instead of burning clean. That's what produces soot, black carbon buildup on the logs, and a lazy, dirty flame.
The ember bed has rules too
The glowing ember material — rock wool, vermiculite, or embers depending on the set — is placed the same deliberate way, and vented and ventless sets are not interchangeable here. On a vented set the embers go over the front pan to glow; pile them wrong or use too much and you smother ports and soot the set.
On a ventless set the placement rules are stricter still, because the burner has to stay clean to keep burning clean and keep the ODS honest. Always work from the manufacturer's placement diagram — that little card in the manual exists for exactly this.
After cleaning, and when to call
The most common time logs get put back wrong is after someone dusts or vacuums the set. Snap a photo before you touch anything, or better, leave the disassembly to the annual service.
