Does my chimney flue size matter for vented gas logs?

Vented logs borrow your chimney

Vented gas logs are designed to burn with the damper open and exhaust up the flue, exactly like a wood fire — that's what gives them the tall, realistic yellow flame. Vented logs are decorative-first — most of their heat goes up the chimney with the exhaust, and that's the trade for the best flame gas offers. Because they lean on your existing chimney to carry off combustion byproducts, the flue absolutely matters. It has to be an intact, properly drafting masonry chimney with a working (and clamped-open) damper, sized to move that exhaust up and out.

When the flue is the problem

If the flue is too small, partially blocked, or the liner is cracked and deteriorated, vented logs can spill soot and combustion products back into the room instead of up the chimney. That's why we start with an inspection, not an install. A quick level inspection tells us whether your chimney is ready or needs work first. An old, unlined, or undersized flue may need attention before any log set goes in — and a set like the Real Fyre Charred American Oak deserves a chimney that lets it perform.

No good chimney? There's another path

If your flue can't be made right, or you don't have a usable chimney at all, that's the moment to weigh ventless logs, which burn with the damper closed and keep their heat in the room. They're an efficient supplemental heater — but they come with real rules on room size, BTU limits, moisture, and where they're allowed, so they aren't a fit for every space. A direct-vent fireplace sidesteps the chimney question entirely if you'd rather not deal with the flue at all.
