How do I measure the size of my existing chimney flue?

Measure the opening, not the brickwork

The number that matters is the flue's inside clear dimension, not the outside of the chimney — brick, block, and mortar can be four inches thick or more, so measuring the exterior tells you nothing useful. If you have a clay tile liner, measure the inside width and length of the tile opening at the top of the chimney; clay flues are rectangular or square, and it's the clear inside space that counts.

If it's a round metal flue, measure the inside diameter. For anything liner- or insert-related, also measure the vertical drop from the top of the chimney down to the damper or smoke chamber — that's your height.

Do it from the top, and do it safely

On most chimneys the honest place to read those dimensions is from the roof, at the top of the flue — which is exactly why this is a job worth handing off. Steep mountain rooflines, wet leaves, and a long fall are not worth a tape measure.

When we inspect a chimney we bring the access gear and, where needed, a camera to read the flue top to bottom and confirm it's clear and intact, not just sized. Guessing at the flue from the firebox looking up is unreliable — the smoke chamber and offsets distort what you can see.

Those dimensions feed real decisions: whether an insert's liner will drop down the flue, whether the flue is properly proportioned to a fireplace opening, or what a real-estate or Level 2 inspection turns up before a sale.
