Does the length of the gas line run change what pipe size I need?

Yes — length is half the equation. The farther gas has to travel, the more pressure it loses to friction, so a longer run needs a larger pipe to deliver the same BTUs. A 1/2-inch line that feeds a fireplace fine at ten feet may fall short at sixty. We size for BTU demand and distance together.

Why distance matters as much as demand

Gas sizing tables have two axes: how many BTUs you need and how far the pipe runs. Friction inside the pipe eats pressure over distance, so capacity drops steadily the longer the run. The same 3/4-inch line might carry around 200,000 BTU near the meter and well under half that a hundred feet away. Every elbow and fitting adds a little "equivalent length" on top of the measured distance.

What this means in a real house

It's the reason a fireplace on the far end of a rambling floor plan — or out in a detached space — often needs a bigger trunk than one sitting near the meter. In our mountain builds, gas frequently travels from a propane tank set well off the house, or from a meter on the opposite corner, and that distance drives us up a pipe size. We'd rather run 3/4-inch and never think about it than squeak by on 1/2-inch and watch the flame struggle.

We measure before we size

This is why we walk the actual route before quoting — measuring the run, counting fittings, and noting elevation changes — rather than assuming. Sizing gas pipe is licensed work in NC for exactly this reason: get the length-versus-load math wrong and the appliance underperforms or, worse, other appliances get starved.
