How do I know if my existing gas line can handle a new fireplace?

You add up every appliance the line feeds — furnace, water heater, range, dryer — plus the new fireplace, then check that total BTU load against the pipe's size and length. If the existing line was sized only for what's already on it, adding a fireplace can overload it. A licensed contractor confirms this with a load calc and a pressure test.

The math your line has to pass

Every gas line has a ceiling set by its diameter and its run length. When we're asked to tap an existing line, we total the connected load — a furnace might be 80,000 to 100,000 BTU, a tank water heater 40,000, a range 65,000 — then add the fireplace's 20,000 to 40,000. If that sum exceeds what the pipe can deliver at its length, appliances start robbing each other on the coldest mornings.

Signs the line is already maxed

The tell is simultaneous demand. A fireplace that burns fine alone but drops to a weak flame when the furnace kicks on is a starved line, not a bad fireplace. We see this weekly in older Asheville homes where a half-inch branch was run decades ago for one appliance and has been quietly overloaded by every upgrade since. Sometimes the fix is a larger trunk from the meter; sometimes it's a dedicated new branch.

How we verify it — not a guess

We don't eyeball it. We map the whole system back to the meter or propane regulator, run the sizing tables for your exact lengths and fittings, and check meter or regulator capacity too — because the pipe isn't the only limit.
