Can my gas meter or propane regulator handle adding a fireplace?
Usually yes for one fireplace, but not always — the meter or regulator is a real capacity limit, separate from the pipe. Each is rated for a maximum total BTU load. If your home already runs a furnace, water heater, range, and dryer, adding a fireplace can push a smaller meter or regulator to its ceiling. We check that rating before we size pipe.
The limit upstream of the pipe
People focus on pipe size and forget the meter or regulator feeding it. Both have a stamped capacity — a maximum cubic-feet-per-hour they can pass. On natural gas, if your total connected load already crowds the meter's rating, the utility has to upsize the meter before another appliance goes on. On propane, the regulator (sometimes a two-stage setup) sets the ceiling, sized to the tank and the total demand.
Natural gas versus propane, locally
