Can my gas meter or propane regulator handle adding a fireplace?

Around Mills River, many homes run propane on large rural lots, and the open valley makes this outdoor-living country — so the capacity question here often isn't an indoor fireplace at all. It's a gas fire pit, which can pull far more fuel than a fireplace. Your regulator may take one easily and strain at the other; we size for what you're actually adding.

A fire pit is not a small load

An indoor gas fireplace is a modest draw, but outdoor fire features are a different animal — a square gas fire pit like Napoleon's Uptown runs 60,000 BTU on propane, heavier than many furnaces. Drop that onto a regulator already feeding the house and you can hit the ceiling fast. This is exactly why we total the real BTUs of what you're adding, not just check a box that says 'fireplace.' The good news: most existing propane systems out here were sized with rural appetite in mind.

The regulator and the tank both matter

On propane, two limits stack: the regulator's rated flow and the tank's ability to vaporize enough propane on a cold night. A big outdoor burner tests both. We size the regulator — often a two-stage setup — on the LP side, and coordinate tank sizing with your propane supplier if the demand calls for a larger tank. Where a home sits on the Henderson County natural-gas edge instead, a crowded meter gets upsized through the utility.

Plan it before entertaining season

Mills River's open valley is made for outdoor gathering, so plan the gas fire pit in late spring, before the guests arrive — permitting and pressure-testing an outdoor-rated, buried line takes a proper Henderson County permit and an inspector visit. That licensed line is our lane; a hardscaper can build a beautiful surround but legally can't connect the fuel. Twenty-five minutes south of our showroom. Call (828) 545-0525.
