Can my gas meter or propane regulator handle adding a fireplace?
Out around Brevard, most homes we serve run propane, so the real gatekeeper isn't a utility meter — it's your regulator. A two-stage LP regulator is sized to the tank and to everything the house burns, and adding a fireplace usually fits, but we verify the rating rather than trust that the tank simply 'has plenty.'
Propane sets its ceiling at the regulator
On propane, the pressure and flow your appliances see come through a regulator — often a two-stage arrangement stepping tank pressure down to what a fireplace actually wants. That regulator carries a capacity, and so does the tank's own supply on a cold night. A gas fireplace or log set is a modest addition, but if your furnace, water heater, and range already lean on the system, we may need to resize the regulator. We do that on the LP side; the tank itself is coordinated with your propane supplier.
Cabins, crawl spaces, and 80 inches of rain
Transylvania County catches more than 80 inches of rain a year, and it shows up in the mechanical details — regulators, vents, and outdoor gas components corrode faster in this damp, and crawl-space runs need moisture-minded routing. A regulator quietly at its limit is easier to catch during a full assessment than on the first cold night.
Permitted, pressure-tested, licensed
Whatever the tank says, running or extending propane pipe is licensed work in North Carolina — a hearth showroom or a mason can sell the firebox but legally can't connect it. We pull the Transylvania County permit, size and pressure-test the line, and set the appliance to burn clean on LP, which takes different orifices and pressures than natural gas.
