Can my gas meter or propane regulator handle adding a fireplace?
For most Asheville homes on the natural-gas mains, yes — one fireplace fits comfortably under the meter's rating. But the meter is its own ceiling, separate from the pipe, and an older Montford or North Asheville house may already run a smaller meter loaded with a furnace, water heater, range, and dryer. We read that stamp before we quote a thing.
Why the meter gets the last word
Every gas meter carries a stamped rating — the most cubic feet per hour it can pass — and your total connected appliances all have to live under it. A gas fireplace is a light load next to a furnace, so the question is rarely the fireplace itself. It's whether your existing appliances have already crowded the meter to its edge. When the numbers say they have, the fix is a larger meter, which we coordinate with the utility rather than guess around — and it's far better known now than mid-winter.
