Can my gas meter or propane regulator handle adding a fireplace?

Clyde's older 1960s-80s ranch homes are prime candidates for insert upgrades, and that's where the capacity question lands. A dated open firebox burned no gas; drop in a sealed insert and you add a fuel load to a house whose gas meter or propane regulator was sized long ago. It usually fits — we read the rating before sizing pipe.

Ranch-era systems meet a modern insert

When these ranches were built, the gas service — natural gas nearer town, propane out toward Fines Creek and Crabtree — was sized to the appliances of the day. A modern heat-producing insert adds a burner that draws alongside the furnace and water heater. It's a modest load, but 'modest' still has to fit under the meter's stamped capacity or the regulator's rated flow, so we total your real connected BTUs first rather than assume decades-old service left slack. No two ranches on the same street were plumbed identically.

Damp valley, aging components

Clyde shares Canton and Waynesville's cold-air drainage, and Pigeon-valley river humidity rusts dampers and degrades chimney components early — so an insert install here is a good moment to inspect the whole fuel path, not just add the appliance. On propane a two-stage regulator sized to the tank sets the ceiling, handled on our LP side; on natural gas, a crowded meter gets upsized through the utility. We'd rather catch a rusted, straining component during the assessment than on the first cold night.

Haywood County permit, licensed line

Connecting gas to that insert is licensed work — a mason can reline the flue, but the fuel connection is ours. We pull the Haywood County permit, size and pressure-test the line, and meet the inspector, protecting your insurance and future sale. Twenty-five minutes west of our Asheville showroom, Clyde is a familiar drive. Call (828) 545-0525 for a free assessment.
