Can my gas meter or propane regulator handle adding a fireplace?

Mars Hill splits between easy-use gas fireplaces near the university and rural homes out Spring Creek and Gabriels Creek that lean on propane or wood. So the capacity check depends on which Mars Hill you're in — a natural-gas meter in town, or a propane regulator and tank on a rural lot. A fireplace usually fits either; we confirm the rating that governs yours.

Two systems, two ceilings

On natural gas, the meter's stamped capacity is the limit, and a crowded one gets upsized through the utility. On rural propane, a two-stage regulator — sized to the tank and the home's total demand — sets the ceiling, and a cold-night tank has its own vapor limit besides. A gas fireplace is a modest addition to either, but the honest answer comes from totaling your real connected load, not assuming a rural tank always has slack. We'd rather resize a regulator now than chase a dropping flame in January.

Wood-heavy country, still worth the gas math

Plenty of Mars Hill homes heat with wood, and some rural properties have limited electrical capacity — which is why non-electric, millivolt gas units that light and modulate without a circuit board appeal here. If you're adding a gas fireplace alongside existing wood heat, the propane side still has to carry it. This is one of the colder spots we serve at 2,350 feet, so getting fuel capacity right before winter isn't optional. A licensed load calc settles it before anyone commits to pipe.
