How big should the TV be relative to the fireplace below it?

Match the widths, then stack them

The cleanest-looking media walls keep the TV and the fireplace close in width, with the TV equal to the fireplace or slightly wider — never dramatically narrower, which leaves the screen looking perched on top of the flame. In practice, a 50-inch linear fireplace like the Napoleon Vector 50 stacks nicely under a 55-to-65-inch TV, while a 42-inch unit like the Cosmo 42 or Meridian 42 pairs well with roughly a 48-to-55-inch set.

Then leave a deliberate gap between the two — for a slim mantel shelf, a soundbar, or just visual breathing room so they don't crowd each other. Getting these proportions right is most of what makes a wall look designed rather than DIY.

Don't let the TV climb too high

Oversizing the TV creates a hidden problem: a bigger screen has to go higher to clear the fireplace, and its center creeps above comfortable seated eye level. You want the middle of the TV roughly where your eyes land from the sofa, so on a tall wall a slightly smaller TV mounted lower usually beats a huge one craned toward the ceiling.

This is exactly the situation where mounting the TV beside the fireplace, rather than above it, sometimes wins outright. We'd rather set the fireplace at the right height for a comfortable view than solve it later with a motorized mount.
