Should I recess the TV into the wall above the fireplace?

The upside of recessing

Recessing the TV into a niche gives you the cleanest, most built-in result — the screen sits flush with the finished wall instead of standing off it, and the mount and wiring vanish behind the surface. It's the detail that makes a media wall look architectural rather than like a TV bolted to a wall, and it pairs especially well with a clean-face linear fireplace below for a seamless, gallery-like feature. Homeowners going for a modern, minimalist look almost always want this.

The heat and framing catch

There are two real constraints. First, a niche traps heat, so recessing only makes sense above a cool-wall gas model like the Heat & Glo Cosmo 42 or an electric fireplace — never over a hot standard gas unit — and even then it needs adequate ventilation and clearance for the mount to tilt. Second, a niche has to be framed during construction; retrofitting one into an existing wall means opening the drywall back up.

If you're unsure, a low-profile surface mount over the right fireplace is a safer, simpler call that still looks tidy. We see the heat mistake most often when a builder framed a niche over a standard gas box without thinking about where the warmth goes.

Plan it at rough-in

A recessed TV is a rough-in decision, not a finishing one. We coordinate the firebox height, its heat rating, and the framing so the niche ends up safe, square, and correctly ventilated — then your electrician runs the recessed in-wall power and AV. Wiring a live circuit is the electrician's license; the firebox and its clearances are ours, and we stage the two so the niche is framed and vented before anything gets buttoned up.
