How deep does a media wall bump-out need to be to house an electric fireplace?
For most recessed electric fireplaces, plan a bump-out about 6 to 8 inches deep — enough to bury the firebox plus a small air gap and the wiring behind the drywall. Slim linear electrics like the Dimplex IgniteXL Bold are built shallow for exactly this, so a 2x6 wall or a furred-out 2x4 wall usually does it. Always confirm the specific model's rough-opening depth first.
The number depends on the unit
Recessed electrics are designed to sit shallow, often in the 5-to-8-inch range, so a 2x6 stud wall at about 5.5 inches, or a 2x4 wall furred out an inch or two, houses one cleanly. Gas is a completely different story: a direct-vent gas firebox needs far more depth plus a vent path, so if there's any chance you'll want gas in that media wall down the road, frame around the gas appliance from the start — retrofitting depth later means opening the wall again.
Leave room around the box
Depth isn't the only clearance. Keep the manufacturer's required air gap, and — this trips people up — don't bury the heat outlet. Many electric units blow warm air out the top or front, and trimming over that vent chokes the heat and can nuisance-trip the unit. Plan the power circuit, and hold combustible materials back per the manual. It's a low-heat appliance, but it still has rules.
