How do I design a media wall with an electric fireplace?

Why electric is the media-wall default

Electric is the path of least resistance for a media wall, and there's a good reason it dominates them. A linear electric unit like the Dimplex IgniteXL Bold 50 recesses fully flush into a shallow framed wall, throws its heat out the front rather than up the wall so it won't cook a TV above, and has a flame-only summer mode for ambiance without warmth. There's no venting, no gas line, and no chimney — it runs off a dedicated outlet.

The honest limits: it's roughly 5,000 BTU of supplemental heat over about 400 square feet, and it's dead in a power outage, so if backup heat is the goal you want gas or wood instead. We build these for busy family rooms across Asheville and Fletcher.

Lay it out so it reads built-in

Recess the fireplace flush so the glass sits proud with your finish, then center the TV above it — the fireplace should be about the same width as the TV or a touch wider so the screen doesn't look perched. Leave a deliberate gap between the two for a soundbar and clean wire management.

For the surround, this is where large-format porcelain, stacked stone, limewash plaster, or a wood-slat accent all look great, since electric runs cool enough to give you nearly unlimited finish options right to the edge. Decide the TV size at the same time you frame — not after.

Get the sequence right

The difference between a media wall that looks custom and one that looks tacked-on is planning it before the drywall closes. Frame the bump-out to the unit's depth, and have the dedicated outlet and low-voltage AV pathways run at rough-in.
