Where should a soundbar and speakers go in a fireplace media wall design?
Put the soundbar just below the TV and above the fireplace, on a recessed ledge or slim floating shelf — never in the heat path directly above the firebox glass. In-wall or in-ceiling speakers flank the TV for stereo width. Plan wire chases and speaker cutouts before the surround goes up, not after.
Soundbar: below the screen, out of the plume
The soundbar belongs directly under the TV and above the fireplace, tucked onto a recessed ledge or a slim floating shelf with a small air gap behind it. Heat rises off a working gas fireplace, so the one place a bar shouldn't sit is squarely in the plume coming off the firebox glass. Cool-face, direct-vent units like the Heat & Glo Cosmo 42 keep the wall above them cooler and let you mount tighter, but even those get a clearance check first. On an electric media wall the whole question relaxes — the front stays cool, so the bar can sit right at the fireplace's top edge.
Speakers: build the width into the wall
For real stereo width, flank the TV with in-wall speakers or drop in-ceiling speakers just ahead of the seating. Both disappear into a clean media wall far better than bookshelf boxes sitting on a mantel. If you want surround, plan the rear speaker locations at the same time — running that wire is trivial before the drywall and finish stone go on, and a headache after. Keep any speaker grille out of the surround material that will get warm near the firebox.
Plan the guts before the finish goes up
The mistake we see most is a beautiful stone or plaster surround built over a wall with no chase for wires, then a scramble to hide cables afterward. Rough in conduit and low-voltage chases while the wall is open.
