How deep does an outdoor gas line need to be buried?
Buried gas line typically goes about 12 to 18 inches deep — below normal digging and disturbance — with the exact depth set by code, pipe type, and whether it crosses a driveway or high-traffic area, which call for more cover. We use outdoor-rated pipe, bury it to spec, and call 811 first. Depth is inspected, not guessed.
The depth, and what changes it
A private line serving a fire pit or outdoor fireplace generally sits in that 12-to-18-inch range. Run it under a driveway, parking area, or anywhere vehicles roll, and it goes deeper with added protection so nothing crushes or nicks it over time.
Frost isn't the driver for gas the way it is for water — gas doesn't freeze in the pipe — but adequate cover keeps the line safe from shovels, aerators, fence posts, and future landscaping. We set it to your local code and mark it.
Material and protection
Below grade we use pipe rated for burial — coated steel or approved polyethylene — never bare indoor black iron, which corrodes underground. Where the line surfaces to meet the feature, it comes up through a sleeve or transitions to hard pipe so the vulnerable spot is armored.
We also lay tracer or marker tape above the line during backfill. It's a small step that saves the next digger — you, a landscaper, or a future crew — from finding the line the hard way.
Dig safe, dig legal
Before any trench, we call 811 to have existing utilities located, so we don't tie into your fire pit by cutting your neighbor's cable or your own water service. On propane properties out in Fairview or Brevard, that includes flagging the existing buried tank line.
