How do I adjust the flame height on my gas fireplace?

On most direct-vent gas fireplaces, you adjust flame height with the remote, wall control, or a manual knob at the valve. Look for a flame or up/down button on the remote, or turn the flame-adjustment knob behind the lower louver. Turning it up raises the flame and the heat; turning it down lowers both together.

Where the control lives on your unit

It depends on how your fireplace is equipped, and that's worth pinning down. If you have a modern remote — Napoleon, Heat & Glo IntelliFire, Majestic IntelliFire Touch — the flame-height buttons are right there, often marked with a small flame icon and up/down arrows. Millivolt units with a wall switch usually have a manual flame-adjustment dial mounted at the gas valve, hidden behind the lower grille or louver; reach in and turn it slowly. Some simpler units are fixed-rate with no adjustment at all — the flame is whatever the factory set. If you're not sure which you have, the model plate behind the louver tells us, or call and we'll identify it.

High flame, low flame — what actually changes

Turning the flame up opens the valve wider: taller flames, more gas, more heat. Turning it down does the reverse — a low, quiet flame for ambiance that sips fuel. On a direct-vent unit the flame and the heat move together, so there's no setting that gives you a big flame with little heat. Give it a minute to settle after each adjustment; the burner and logs need a beat to find the new setting.

If the flame won't respond or looks wrong

A flame that won't turn down, sputters, or burns lazy and sooty isn't an adjustment problem — it's a service one. The usual WNC culprit is the off-season classic: spiders and dust clogging the burner ports and pilot assembly over the summer, which throws the flame pattern off. That's exactly what an annual tune-up prevents. If your flame looks unhealthy or ignores the control, don't keep fiddling — call (828) 545-0525 and we'll get it cleaned and dialed in.
