How do I clean and refill a water vapor (mist-flame) electric fireplace?
Refill the reservoir with distilled water only — never tap water — and clean the tank, the transducer disc, and the float about every two weeks with a soft cloth and a little vinegar to keep mineral scale off the mist-maker. Distilled water is the whole trick: our mountain water's mineral content will crust the transducer and kill the flame effect fast.
Why distilled water, every time
A water-vapor fireplace makes its 'flame' by vibrating a tiny ultrasonic transducer disc to turn water into a fine mist, lit from below to look like fire and smoke. Minerals in tap water scale up on that disc and choke the effect within weeks — and plenty of WNC homes are on well water, which is especially rough on it. Distilled water has the minerals removed, so it keeps the transducer clean. This is the single most important thing you can do.
The cleaning rhythm
Roughly every two weeks: empty the reservoir, wipe the tank out, and gently clean the transducer disc and float with a soft cloth or brush and a little white vinegar to lift any scale. Rinse well, then refill with fresh distilled water. Be gentle on the disc — it's the delicate heart of the unit, and scratching it degrades the mist. Never run it dry, and unplug it before you service it.
A note on these units
