How do I clean dust from the heater and vents on an electric fireplace?

Where the dust hides

There are two grilles that matter: the intake, where the fan pulls room air in, and the outlet, where warm air comes out. Dust collects on both, and worse, on the heating element and fan blades behind them. That's the source of the faint burning smell everyone notices the first time they run the heater in fall — it's just dust cooking off, not a fault, but it's a sign it's due for a cleaning.

The cleaning itself

Kill the power first — unplug it, or flip the breaker for a hardwired built-in — and let it cool fully. Run a vacuum with a soft brush head over both grilles, then use short bursts of compressed air to push dust off the element and fan. Don't jam anything metal through the vents, and don't wet the interior. A microfiber cloth handles the surrounding surfaces.

Ten minutes, a couple times a year, and you're done.

Why it's worth the ten minutes

A clean heater breathes properly, so it puts out its full supplemental warmth and doesn't nuisance-trip its safety cutoff on a smothered element.
