How do I clean dust off gas logs without damaging them?
Shut off the gas and pilot, let everything cool completely, then gently lift the dust away with a soft brush or a vacuum on low with a soft-brush attachment — never scrub, never wet them. Ceramic gas logs are fragile and, on realistic sets, hand-painted, so a light touch is the whole game. Note each log's position before you move it.
The safe method, step by step
Gas logs are hollow ceramic fiber — light, brittle, and finished with heat-painted detail on quality sets like Real Fyre. Start cold: turn the appliance and pilot off and give it plenty of time to cool. Then dust with the softest tool you've got — a clean paint brush, a photographer's blower, or a vacuum nozzle held slightly off the surface with a brush attachment on low suction. Work gently. The dust that settles over a quiet summer is exactly why we tell folks to do this in late summer, before the first burn.
What will wreck them
Water is the enemy — never wash ceramic logs or soak them; trapped moisture can crack them the next time they heat up. Skip household cleaners, degreasers, and anything abrasive; they strip the painted finish and can leave residue that smokes or smells. Don't attack them with a stiff brush or a shop vac cranked to full, and don't knock them together. If a log is already flaking or cracked, cleaning won't save it — that's a replacement, and we can match a single log on many sets.
Put them back exactly right
This is the step people skip and regret. Before you lift anything, snap a photo or note the numbered positions, because gas logs are placed to a factory diagram, not by eye. Set back on the wrong spot, they push flame into soot and, on vent-free sets, can trip the safety sensor.
