How do I keep dust and debris out of my fireplace during the months it is not used?
Close the glass doors or fit a screen, close the damper on wood and vented-log units, and make sure the chimney top is capped or screened so leaves, soot, and animals can't drop in — then dust the logs and firebox before your first burn. The nuisance we fight most in the off-season isn't dust anyway; it's spiders webbing up the pilot and burner ports.
Seal the two openings
A fireplace has two ways for junk to get in: the front and the flue. Close the glass doors or set a fitted screen across the front so household dust, pet hair, and lint stay out of the firebox.
Up top, a closed damper on wood or vented-log units plus a chimney cap with a screen stops the real debris — leaves, twigs, soot flakes, and the birds, squirrels, and raccoons that treat an uncapped mountain chimney like a hollow tree. If you don't have a cap, that's the single best off-season upgrade you can make.
The spider problem nobody warns you about
The dust you can see isn't what strands people in the fall — it's what you can't. Every off-season, spiders and mud daubers find the warm, sheltered burner and pilot assembly and web it up, and their nests clog the tiny pilot orifice and burner ports.
Come the first cold night, the pilot won't light or the flames come in weak and uneven. We pull webs out of pilot assemblies on a huge share of our fall service calls — it's the most common WNC no-light cause we see, and it's exactly what a late-summer tune-up clears.
Close it up clean, open it clean
Whatever does settle, deal with it before the first fire rather than after. Vacuum the firebox, dust the logs gently, and wipe the glass so you're not burning off a summer's grime — that's also what kills the burning-dust smell on the first light.
