How do I prevent rust inside my gas fireplace?
Keep moisture out and the unit dry. Rust inside a gas fireplace comes from humidity, a leaky flue or vent cap, rain finding its way down the chimney, or an idle firebox sweating through our damp mountain summers. Run the fireplace occasionally, fix any water intrusion, keep the glass and firebox clean, and have us inspect the venting and cap yearly.
Where the moisture comes from
Most of the rust we find inside gas fireboxes traces back to water, not the fire. A cracked or missing chimney cap, failed flashing, condensation in a unit that sits idle all summer, or a home closed up tight and humid — those are the usual culprits.
WNC is prime territory for it. Our mountain moisture is relentless, and cabins and second homes that sit vacant for months are the worst cases. A firebox can sweat and start spotting with rust long before anyone notices, because no one's using it.
Habits that keep it dry
Run the fireplace briefly now and then through the off-season — a short burn drives moisture out of the firebox. Keep the glass and interior clean so damp soot isn't holding water against the metal. And make sure the outside vent cap or chimney cap is intact and the termination stays clear.
If you're storing a home cold and humid, either run the fireplace occasionally or keep a dehumidifier going in the room. Dry air is the whole game here.
When rust is already there, call us
