How do I winterize a gas fire pit?

Brevard gets 80-plus inches of rain a year, so winterizing your gas pit is mostly about keeping water out. Shut off the fuel, let it cool, clear and dry the burner and media, and cover it tight. Disconnect a portable propane cylinder and stand it upright outdoors; on a hard-plumbed line, close the appliance valve and leave the piping to us.

Rain is the real enemy here

Transylvania County's rainfall is in a league of its own, and a wet season that runs March through June means your pit can take on water long before and after the freezing months. All that moisture is what cracks crowns, spalls brick and rusts dampers on the chimneys around here — and it does the same quiet damage inside a fire-pit burner pan.

Winterizing in Brevard is less about the cold and more about making sure water drains out and never sits against the burner or igniter.

Cabins and crawl spaces run propane

Downtown Brevard has hard-plumbed pits, but the mountain cabins around Connestee Falls, Sherwood Forest and out toward Pisgah Forest lean on propane. A portable tank comes off, gets capped, and stands upright outside; a buried-tank or hard-plumbed pit just needs its appliance shutoff closed.

That gas connection is licensed work in NC — we permit it with Transylvania County and pressure-test what we run, so capping or reworking a line is ours, not a landscaper's.

Dry it, cover it, check it

Because Brevard's damp lingers, use a fitted, breathable cover so condensation escapes rather than getting trapped against the metal, and look in on the pit on a dry midwinter day. We're about 40 minutes southwest for a spring relight. Call (828) 545-0525 if you're not sure how yours is fueled.
