How does a piezo igniter work?
A piezo igniter is the little push-button that makes a spark to light your pilot — no batteries, no wiring. Pressing it snaps a spring-loaded hammer against a quartz-like crystal, and that sudden squeeze produces a high-voltage spark that jumps across a gap to the pilot gas. You'll hear the click. It's the manual backup on many gas fireplaces and log sets.
A spark from a squeeze
A piezo igniter is the click-button that lights a pilot with no electricity behind it — no batteries, no wiring. Inside is a small spring-loaded hammer and a piezoelectric crystal. Press the button and the spring drives the hammer into the crystal; that sudden mechanical shock forces the crystal to release a burst of high voltage, which jumps as a spark across a gap right at the pilot gas. The click you hear is the hammer firing.
Where you'll meet one
Piezo igniters show up most on match-lit and safety-pilot gas log sets and on manually lit fireplaces — anywhere you light the pilot by hand rather than from a remote. They're the reliable, low-tech way to get a flame going. Because the spark comes purely from mechanics, a piezo works whether or not the power's on, which is a quiet advantage in outage-prone country.
When the click stops lighting
If you're pressing the button, hearing the click, but getting no spark — or a spark that won't reach the pilot — the usual culprits are a cracked electrode, a corroded or misaligned spark gap, a bad wire, or a worn crystal. Sometimes the igniter is fine and the pilot itself is the problem: a season's worth of webbing and grit has clogged the assembly, so the spark has nothing clean to light — the most common gas-fireplace gremlin we see each fall.
